South Africa, Tunisia dominate canoeing

South African and Tunisian athletes dominated the canoeing events on Wednesday, at the 10th All-Africa Games.

While most of the competitions are bring held in Maputo and the neighbouring city of Matola, the canoeing and sailing events are being held at Chidinguele beach, in Gaza province.

In the men’s 1,000 metres single canoe race, South African Calvin Mokoto won the gold with a time of four minutes 30.74 seconds. The silver went to Khaled Bhargouei of Tunisia on 4:35.51, and Angolan canoeist Nelson Henriques, picked up the bronze with a time of 4:50.32.

South Africa and Tunisia also picked up the gold and silver medals in the women’s 500 metre kayak. Bridgitte Hartley of South Africa won the race in a time of 2:03.25, with Afef Ben Ismail in second place on 2:09.78. The bronze went to Khatia Ba, on 2:13.83.

Tunisia took the gold in the men’s 1,000 metre kayak, won by Mohamed Ali Mrabet in 3:40.03, while South African Nick Stubbs came second on 3:44.70. The bronze medal went to Ousmane Fall of Senegal, on 4:09.41.
