#### *OVERVIEW*
The 2026 Minerva Zim Open International brought together 150+ players from Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and the region for 9 rounds of FIDE-rated Swiss competition. With over $10,000 in prizes across 4 sections, the event cemented Minerva’s status as one of Southern Africa’s flagship chess tournaments.
#### *SECTION A – OPEN: UNEXPECTED TRIUMPH*
In a tournament full of upsets, *Kukudzarema Shepherd* stole the show. Seeded 5th, Shepherd scored an unbeaten 8/9 to claim the $1500 first prize and the Minerva 2026 title.
His victory was described as “unexpected” by many spectators. Shepherd outplayed higher-rated IM Gillian Bwalya, Spencer Masango, Kela Kaulule, Tapiwa Jele with calm, precise chess and nerves of steel in the final rounds. He finished half a point ahead of Zambian IM *Bwalya Gillan* who took $750 for 2nd place. *Mushore Emerald* secured 3rd with 6½ points and $450.
The fight for the remaining prizes was fierce. *CM Moyo Dion, Mtonga Augustine, FM Luanja Geoffrey,* and *CM Kaulule Siame Kela* all finished on 6 points.
#### *GAME OF THE TOURNAMENT: MASANGO vs KELA*
The most talked-about game was *Masango Spencer vs CM Kaulule Siame Kela*.
A sharp Sicilian turned into a wild tactical battle. Kela sacrificed for the attack, Masango defended with incredible accuracy. In a time scramble with under 2 minutes each, Masango found the decisive breakthrough in an opposite-colored bishop ending to win the point and $50. The crowd’s reaction said it all — this was Minerva chess at its best: fighting, creative, and dramatic to the last move.
#### *SECTION B – OPEN*
*Mbabvu Blessing* dominated Section B with 8/9 to win $400. *Sibanda Tafadzwa* finished 2nd on 7½ with $250. *Chipamba Walter, Muchesera Roland,* and *Samboko Knowledge* shared 3rd-5th on 7 points.
#### *LADIES SECTION*
Zambia’s *WFM Shaba Linda Dalitso* was unstoppable, scoring 7½/9 to win the Ladies title and $700. *Makwena Christine* and *Mudodo Refiloe* tied for 2nd on 7 points with $350 each.
*Faith Chitinha* was recognized as *Best U20 Lady* with $30. *WFM Mbatha Constance* and *Mathe Nomalungelo* also featured in the top 5.
#### *CORPORATE SECTION*
The Corporate section showcased the growth of workplace chess.
1st: *Ian Mashumba* – $500
2nd: *Innocent Zinhu* – $200
3rd: *Katsande Tinaye* – $175
4th: *Craig Musaka* – $175
5th: *Julius Courage* – $50
6th: *Solomon Chimuzura* – $50
*Runyararo Joseline Manyuchi* won Best Lady Corporate – $100.

The 2026 Minerva Zim Open was a celebration of competitive chess and community. From Kukudzarema Shepherd’s breakthrough victory, to the Masango-Kela thriller, to the rise of juniors and corporate players, the event delivered excitement on every board.
