Games: First medals for Mozambique

Mozambican athletes won their first medals on Wednesday at the 10th All-Africa Games – two silvers, in swimming and karate, and two bronze, in karate and canoeing.

In karate, Mozambique came second in the female kumite team event. The team consisted of Marisa Macie, Linda Mucavele and Lu Ping.

Gold at this event went to Algeria, and the Botswanan team took the bronze.

In the kata men’s team event, the Mozambican team, consisting of Luis Sousa, and the twins Eric and Eddie Santos, won the bronze. The Egyptian team won the gold, and Algeria was in second position.

Kumite and Kata are two forms of karate. Kumite is freestyle sparring, while kata consists of exercises, involving intricately choreographed offensive and defensive movements.

In the swimming pool, Myrian Corsine won the silver medal for Mozambique in the women’s 50 metre breaststroke in a time of 33.74 seconds.

The gold went to South African swimmer Suzaan van Biljon in 32.88 seconds, while Nigerian Racheal Tonfor took the bronze in 33.81 seconds.

This was van Biljon’s second gold medal. She also won the women’s 200 metre breaststroke.

In the canoeing events, held at Nhambavale lake, in the tourist resort of Chidenguele, in Gaza province, Mozambicans Joaquim Lobo and Mussa Tualibudine won the bronze in the men’s 1,000 metre canoeing double. The gold went to Kenya, and the silver to Angola.

In the boxing ring, Mozambican Cremildo Artur, in the flyweight (52 kilos) category, won his third consecutive fight on Wednesday, beating his opponent, Gilbert Bactora of Mauritius, by just one point (12-11). This was a remarkable recovery, since at one point Artur had been losing 7-2. Artur now goes through to the semi-finals

But three other Mozambican boxers, Ussene Alberto, Juliano Maquina, and Francisco Macitela, all lost their fights. Maquina was in the quarter finals of the light flyweight category (46-49 kilos), and lost the bout to Thomas Essomba of Cameroon, by 15 to 8.

In the middleweight (75 kilos) category, Usse Alberto lost his quarter final to Saad Kaddous of Algeria by eight points to four.
