Anglican charges dropped

Public prosecutors have dropped all charges against Anglican Reverend Julius Zimbudzana and referred the matter to the Attorney General’s office which also ruled that Nolbert Kunonga does not have a case against Zimbudzana.

According to Anglican Harare Diocese Secretary, Clifford Dzavo, the charges were dropped on Thursday.

“The prosecutors found him (Zimbudzana) with no case to answer so they referred the matter to the AG’s office which also dismissed the case,” said Dzavo.

Zimbudzana was arrested by the police on Tuesday for allegedly stealing church property worth US$1.5 million in a move that observers said was a manifestation of the harassment of clergy in the troubled Anglican church.

Several priests from the Church of the Province of Central Africa have endured harassment and abuse from Kunonga’s followers. Only two weeks ago 27 priests were made homeless by Kunonga’s gang which is now armed with a court ruling.

The Anglican diocese split with Kunonga back in 2007 after serious differences emerged. Kunonga, who was nicknamed “Mugabe’s Bishop” after declaring his loyalty to the Zanu (PF) leader, started his own Diocese and has since used the police to harass clergy and parishioners who support the CPCA.

In a statement released on Wednesday the CPCA said: “The right of worship as enshrined in the country’s Constitution has been violated and the CPCA calls on the national political leadership to immediately intervene and put a stop to Kunonga’s abuse of the police services.”
