Basketball quarter final win for Mozambique

Mozambique’s women’s basketball team, the country’s best hope for a gold medal in the 10th All-Africa Games, won its quarter final on Friday against Rwanda, by 86 points to 70.

Despite the substantial margin of victory, the Rwandan team was no pushover. Indeed the Rwandans were in the lead throughout the first two quarters of the game, and at half time were beating the Mozambican side by 42-38.

But in the second half the Mozambicans regained their composure and their determination, overtaking Rwanda in the third quarter (59-57), and then cruising to a 16 point victory in the last period of the game.

The Mozambican team thus remains unbeaten, since it won all five of its preliminary rounds (against Zimbabwe, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Algeria and Kenya).

Mozambique now goes on to meet Senegal in the semi-finals on Saturday. If the Mozambican team wins, it will then meet either Angola or Nigeria in the final.

In the other three quarter finals, Angola beat Algeria (85-39), Nigeria beat Ivory Coast (62-45) and Senegal beat Kenya (76-44).

Mozambique was not so successful in the men’s basketball tournament, which began on Friday. In the first of the preliminary rounds, Mozambique lost to Algeria by 71-58. The Algerian team led throughout the match.

In the three other matches played on Friday, Rwanda beat Mali (86-69), Cape Verde beat South Africa (85-33) and Egypt narrowly defeated Ivory Coast (66-62).

In men’s handball, Mozambique went down to defeat by Cameroon (30-20), while Gabon had a one point win over Algeria (26-25).

Mozambique also suffered defeat in the women’s handball, in a closely fought match against Cape Verde. The Cape Verdeans won the narrow victory of 27-26. But the Angolan women crushed their Ghanaian opponents by 55-7, while in the third match of the day Congo beat Nigeria by 30-23.
