The people concerned were moved to the Cateme resettlement area, and protest that their cost of living has increased substantially, because of the added costs of transport to Tete city, which is 60 kilometres away.
The protestors also complain at the poor construction of the houses Vale provided for them, saying that rain water seeps into their homes.
According to a report in Wednesday’s issue of the Maputo daily “Noticias”, the Cateme protesters showed their discontent by blocking the railway, thus preventing a train laden with Vale coal from leaving Moatize. The coal was due to be exported from the port of Beira.
The line was reopened when the police intervened. The protestors did not confront the police and there were no reports of any arrests.
