10 years for corrupt police officers

Two police officers from Gokwe have been slapped with a combined 10 year jail term for taking bribes from suspects.

Jefrey Ngiza (29) and Ngobile Mangena (29) were charged with criminal abuse of office when they appeared before magistrate Phatekile Msipa. On May 10 the two had their bail revoked after it was proved that they had threatened witnesses with unspecified action.

Prosecutor Andrew Marimo told the court that in August 2010 the two arrested Regiment

Mugonero for allegedly stealing 80 bales of cotton in Gokwe and demanded $3,000 to facilitate his release and stop the arrest of his accomplices. Mugonero paid them $1,500.

“The crime was committed by members of the CID who used their technical knowledge to dupe the complainant. A custodial sentence in the circumstances is appropriate in order to deter like-minded officers,” said the magistrate. The officers will serve three and half years each after part of the term was suspended and pay compensation of $875 to complainant.
