As Zapu commemorated the death of former Vice President Joshua Nkomo’s, its Secretary General, Ralph Mguni, accused Zanu (PF) of hypocritically trying to claim the legacy and vision of the late political icon who died in 1999.
“During his life, some of these claimants rejected him. In death they would wish to assume the mantle of being heirs to the Zapu vision, to be following in Nkomo’s footsteps,” said Mguni.
“Shameless hypocrites! Nkomo was unequivocal in condemning those who hijacked and tarnished the vision that Zapu had for an independent Zimbabwe. He spoke out against torture, crime, forced disappearances, a state of emergency and battalions that moved into the streets to battle against workers, peasants or students.”
Mguni recalled Nkomo’s statement that the hands of the Zanu (PF) leaders were stained with the blood of “our people”, against the ideals of a genuine revolution.
“Simply put, the government we have been subjected to over the past 32 years was never about people’s aspirations or listening to their anguished voices. Yes in 1980 we replaced the minority regime but in Nkomo’s words, “with a fascist one,” added Mguni.
