Mozambican athletes for London olympics

Mozambique will be represented by just six athletes at the Olympic Games, due to begin in London on 27 July.

According to a report in Thursday’s issue of the Maputo daily “Noticias”, the six are:

Kurt Couto (Athletics – men’s 100 metre hurdles);

Sylvia Panguane (Athletics – women’s 100 metre hurdles);

Juliano Maquina (boxing – 49 kilo category);

Neuso Sigauque (judo – under 60 kilo category);

Jessica Vieira (swimming – women’s 50 and 100 metre freestyle);

Chakil Camal (swimming – men’s 100 metre freestyle).

Hopes of a medal rest mainly on the shoulders of Kurt Couto, who is the most experienced of the group. He took part in the Athens (2004) and Beijing (2008) Olympics, and won the silver medal in the 400 metres hurdles at the All-Africa games in Maputo last September.

The only other member of the team who also competed in the Beijing Olympics is the swimmer Chakil Camal.
