Business development centres to be set up

The Mozambican Confederation of Business Associations (CTA) intends to set up three business development centres to solve the problem that local companies lack information about business opportunities.

According to CTA spokesperson Hipolito Hamela, Mozambican companies have so far not been able to take advantage of the mega-projects operating in the country, particularly in the mining industry, because of lack of information.

The CTA thus plans to establish business development centres in the three regions of the country – Maputo (south), Beira (centre) and Nampula (north). Hamela gave no date for setting up the centres, but said the CTA already has money for this initiative.

“The CTA will set up three business centres to inform Mozambican companies about the needs of the large projects – about what these large enterprises will need in the short, medium and long term to make their activities viable. These could form business opportunities for our companies”, Hamela stressed.

The CTA is calling for more linkages between the mega-projects and small and medium companies, which could help create more jobs for Mozambicans.

Hamela said Mozambicans could participate in the mining industry through the provision of services. “This is the kind of linkage which can create more employment and more benefits for Mozambicans, since we don’t have the technological capacity to invest directly in this industry”, he explained. “We can obtain advantages by providing services to the large companies”.

Hamela was speaking in Maputo on Tuesday during a seminar presenting the results of a study, ordered by the CTA, on “the effects of the natural resource explosion on the economic growth of Mozambique”.
