Buddies square-up in SA cup

Long-time colleagues and former Warriors team-mates, Kaitano Tembo and Wilfred Mugeyi, will be in the opposing dugouts this weekend, when their teams lock horns in the Telkom Knockout.

The two, who are assistant coaches, dared each other ahead of what is undoubtedly the pick of the crop in the first week of the knockout competition, – Supersport United versus Ajax Cape Town.

“Supersport is a good side, but we will surely take advantage of home advantage on our quest for the trophy,” said Mugeyi, assistant coach at Ajax.

Tembo said his Supersport United players, who recently lost the MTN 8 final against Moroka Swallows, were motivated to add to Ajax’s miseries, caused by the Urban Warriors’ poor start to the season.

Meanwhile, Black Leopards coach, Sunday Chidzambga, is not losing sleep ahead of Saturday’s seemingly-challenging game against defending cup champions, Orlando Pirates.

Chidzambga’s team has a bad record against Pirates, having lost all league and cup matches to the Soweto giants since their return to the topflight last season.

Despite his side being drawn to contest the Telkom Knockout Last 16 against a side that also beat them in the 2010/11 Nedbank Cup final, the former Zimbabwe Warriors coach was unfazed.

A credible start to the current season, which sees Leopards in mid-table, buoyed Chidzambga.

“Unlike the last time when we last faced them, we are now ready to compete,” he said ahead of the match scheduled for Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
