Publisher fined for operating without a licence

Dennis Kagonye editor of the Weekly Mirror was on 7 November 2012 fined $100 for operating a mass media service without a licence in contravention of section 72 of the draconian Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA).

Chinhoyi magistrate Fanuel Nyakudya, sentenced Kagonye to two months in prison with the option of a $100 fine. Kagonye was also slapped with a further suspended sentence of six months imprisonment on condition he does not commit a similar offence within the next five years.

Kagonye was represented by Kudzai Choga, who was acting under the auspices of the Media Lawyers Network (MLN).

Background

Kagonye was arrested on 6 November 2012 on allegations of operating a media house without a licence.
