Despite opposition from election observer groups, the MDC formations and SADC, Mugabe is insisting that elections be held in March next year. This is against the agreement he signed with other coalition government principals in 2009 that polls can only be held after critical reforms including a new constitution, in order to ensure a fair result.
Speaking at a district peace rally in Mkoba over the weekend, Matibenga, who is also the MDC-T Kuwadzana MP and veteran trade unionist, said Mugabe was trying to shift attention from reforms to a debate on the election date.
“He (Mugabe) knows full well that his stance is unacceptable, but will push for it so that it gets attention and everything else is abandoned,” she said. “We are not afraid of polls, but let’s complete a clear roadmap which will produce an un-contestable result.”
Mkoba MP and MDC-T national secretary for water, Amos Chibaya, reiterated that Mugabe does not own Zimbabwe. “People are not owned by Mugabe. Therefore he cannot dictate to us and ignore our concerns which are as equal as his. We will not accept that,” he said.
