The last time the lake was this low was in 1992 when the country was hit by a severe drought.
Addressing residents in Masvingo recently, Deputy Mayor Selina Maridza said the council would introduce water rationing if no meaningful rains were received this month.
“The council will soon introduce water rationing because water levels in the lake have fallen to alarming levels,” said the Deputy Mayor.
Taps across the city have been dry for days, with those in high lying areas suffering the most. Among those worst affected are Mucheke A high density’s Mustafa area, some parts of Rhodene and Rujeko where water shortages are common.
Masvingo Mayor Alderman Femias Chakabuda said the council’s water system was now overwhelmed by demand. He said the council should embark on a water augmentation programme which would see the installation of new pipes from Lake Mutirikwi to council reservoirs at the Target Kopie.
