Khumalo aims high

Long distance runner, Prodigal Khumalo, wants to quickly forget this year and use his recent victory as a springboard to a successful 2013.

Khumalo recently won the season-ending Sani Stagger Marathon, where he clocked 3 hours 8 minutes and missed the record by a minute. The gold medal was a change of fortune for the 30-year-old, nagged by injuries for the better part of the year.

“Winning this race after staying so long with an injury has given me confidence that I will have a good season in 2013,” the Bulawayo-born athlete.

“It was a tough race, starting with a 21km steep up and finishing with another 21km steep down. However, winning the race and coming to within a minute of the record gave me confidence. I now have the strength for next year.”

One of the region’s most gruelling events, the Sani Stagger Marathon attracted 500 athletes this year. It is run under hot conditions at the region bordering South Africa and Lesotho and consists of mountainous terrain and parched land.
