NAC to train traditional healers

At least 360 traditional healers will be trained on HIV/AIDS programmes in a bid to raise awareness among patients and people living with the virus, says a National AIDS Council official. NAC is concerned that a significant number of people living with HIV and AIDS are shunning modern facilities. “We want traditional healers to educate their patients that HIV is real and can be controlled if they refer them for testing and treatment,” he said.

The traditional healers are mainly drawn from rural areas. “This is the first phase programme and due to limited funding we have deliberately chosen six rural provinces to train registered traditional and spiritual healers,” he said. The Ministry of Health and Child Welfare has a parallel administration department, the Traditional Medical Council, which registers and monitors the affairs of traditional healers and medicines. Dube said through a SADC Special Fund on HIV a number of community based HIV programmes are running in the country.
