Agricultural technicians to study in Portugal

The Polytechnic Institute of Braganca (IPB) in northern Portugal is to launch a scheme to train senior staff from Mozambique to develop agricultural production and strengthen the export of exotic agricultural products.

IPB has entered into an agreement with the Mozambican Ministry of Agriculture under which each year 15 senior technicians will study in Portugal for a master’s degree on food safety and quality.

According to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Daniel Clemente, through this partnership Mozambique wants its technical staff to study so that they can deliver the government’s Agricultural Sector Strategic Development Plan (PEDSA) and create the institutional capacity to develop value and promote exports.

The protocol between the two sides also aims to increase capacity in research, natural resource management and production.

Through this partnership Mozambique wants to stamp out low quality in agricultural goods at the level of production, storage and processing, which would remove a barrier to agrarian exports such as bananas.
