MDC councillors in trouble

Two MDC-T councillors in Glen Norah are in trouble with party activists who accused them of overriding party guidelines.

Sources who spoke to The Zimbabwean accused Ward 28 Councillor, Wellington Chikombo, of abusing his influence in the district to wrestle the position of treasurer from Margaret Shavai.

Chikombo lost the position to Shavai during the party’s congress held two years ago. The source claimed that Chikombo acted in connivance with the party’s District Chairperson, Webster Maondera.

“Chikombo lost to Shavai but he was assisted by Maondera to grab that position back. Chikombo and Maondera are close allies and we suspect they mooted this plan together,” said a source who declined to be named.

MDC-T Youth Chairperson for Glen Norah District, Darlington Munatsi, confirmed that controversy surrounded Chikombo’s ascendancy to the position treasurer.

“We were told that Shavai wrote a letter saying she had resigned from the position but it is not very clear whether she wrote that letter under duress,” said Munatsi.

When contacted for comment, Chikombo said: “I think the best person to talk to is Chamisa”.

Efforts to contact Chamisa were unsuccessful.

In another case, MDC-T activists in Glen Norah blamed Ward 27 councillor, Herbert Gomba, for submitting his wife’s curriculum vitae through unorthodox means ahead of the party’s primary elections.

“I think his plan is that if he is stopped from contesting, he would use his influence to rally behind his wife in the forthcoming elections,” said a source speaking on condition of anonymity. In his response to the allegations, Gomba said it was the work of detractors.

“Why would I want my wife to contest me to the advantage of detractors? I don’t think that is true. I submitted my CV as an individual and my focus now is to win the election. These allegations are baseless” said Gomba.
