Police disrupt MDC-T conference meeting

Police last night disrupted a cluster meeting at the on-going MDC-T National Policy Conference, citing security concerns.

According to the rapporteur for the economic cluster, Moses Chundu, police details gave them only five minutes to wrap up proceedings and leave the venue.

“We still had at least three hours of discussions to go through. We were told it was a security issue,” Chundu said.

Co-Home Affairs Minister Theresa Makone told the conference that she was surprised that police were making it their business to tell delegates time to go to bed.

“I am surprised that the police would become involved in a conference that is supposed to be two and a half days long. What time we choose to break is none of their business,” she said.

Makone said the disruption would however not detract her party form conference business.

“It is not going to detract us from what we are doing. This evening I will stay behind and if they come again I want them to arrest me. How can they tell us what time to sleep?

“We know it is Zanu (PF) that is sending them to do that. But when they had their conference in Gweru no one disrupted them,” she said.

One of the delegates said:“I did not hear anything that they said but as soon as they finished talking to some of the leaders everybody began to leave,” he said.

Another delegate questioned why Makone as the co-Home Affairs Minister failed to take action.

“She should do something about this,” he said.

MDC-T is holding its policy conference under the theme “Towards real transformation”. It was officially opened on Friday and will end on tomorrow (Sunday).
