Last month, centre manager Margaret Chigwanda told this newspaper that the institution was facing serious financial constraints, including an outstanding $18,000 electricity debt as well $10,000 water bill and was failing to feed patients.
JBMS is an international organisation founded in 1995 to assist Mutemwa in memory of John Bradburne who worked at the centre for 10 years before his death in 1979.
This week Chigwanda said people had been coming forward with proposals looking at raising cash for Mutemwa.
“We have also been approached by some people willing to build boreholes for us. There is a donor who gave us money to buy five and a half tonnes of maize but the problem now is getting the maize on the market. Also, there is somebody who has sent money for our electricity bill and we hope that in the coming week, we will resolve our issue with ZESA,” said Chigwanda.
Financial constraints have forced the institution to downsize the number of patients under its care to 43 from the normal 65. Well-wishers can deposit money into Mutemwa Leprosy Centre’s Standard Chartered Bank Account Number 8700270585300, Mutoko Branch.
