Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition Director, Macdonald Lewanika, told The Zimbabwean that the use of social media would allow for extensive monitoring of the elections.
“We will encourage people with access to the internet to send information concerning what is happening in their area. We believe it is every Zimbabwean’s responsibility to ensure the country holds free and fair elections, hence the move to include the masses in the monitoring process,” said Lewanika.
Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition is a group of more than 350 civil society organisations.
The move will ensure that some cases of human rights violations that have for long been swept under the carpet in some remote parts of the country will be exposed through naming and shaming of the perpetrators.
Lewanika said that CSOs would embark on a massive publicity campaign to make people in various parts of the country aware of the monitoring exercise.
A recent round-table discussion held at the Media Centre in the capital recommended that there be improved access to the internet by ordinary citizens in order for CSOs to be able to capitalise on the opportunities offered by the social media in monitoring elections.
