“There is raw material generation and employment creation in recycling. The government should invest more in recycling by assisting small players in the sector with equipment,” said Managing Director of Plastix Incorporated, Mary Wazara.
Her company has come up with colour-coded bins to aid the recycling process.
“We have poly-harvesters, people who move around collecting plastic bottles to sell to recyclers, and it is important to educate people about what material is recyclable and what will decompose,” she said.
Wazara said the issue of waste management was not only for local authorities and the government but applied to every citizen.
Environment Africa spokesperson, Sandra Gobvu, said private players such as network service providers, and beverage companies should invest in waste management.
Meanwhile, HCC Town Clerk, Tendai Mahachi, said they were engaging kombi operators to raise awareness on waste management.
“The kombi operators carry about 1, 5 million people a day and it would be wise to equip each kombi with a bin. Before they leave the terminus kombi drivers should urge commuters not to litter,” he said.
Mahachi said the council had donated 2,430 bins to public service vehicle owners.
