Most of his subjects, particularly supporters of Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s faction of the MDC, hailed the stance as a positive step towards democracy.
Mberengwa villager, Rugare Gwezuva, who was ordered to vacate the area in July last year described the chief as “someone who had seen the light”.
‘’Since the intervention of JOMIC, Chief Mapiravana repented and no longer meddles in politics. Mapiravana now respects different opinions and political beliefs. Of late he has been preaching the gospel of political tolerance,” said Gwezuva.
Other villagers said the chief was now calling for unity, peace and political tolerance, earning the respect of many people from other political parties.
“People here are now maturing politically. Local political leaders from all parties were given equal opportunities to address a recent gathering, something that was previously taboo among Mapiravana’s subjects. We therefore urge other chiefs in Zimbabwe to emulate this chief,” said local villager, Onwell Chiponda.

I was afraid of going to my Rural Home in Mberengwa District because I have known our people of being intolerant of different political minds. I therefore salute the chief for this development hoping that this spreads to all chiefs and headmen.
