Mugeyi aims higher

Former national team striker, Wilfred Mugeyi, said recently that ABSA Premiership club Amazulu, where he is assistant coach, would be fighting for top honours next season.

“Usuthu” are the third side Mugeyi worked for during the just-ended season. He left his long stint as assistant coach for Ajax Cape Town to try out as head coach of Chippa United, but was sacked after a short spell.

He then joined the Durban-based Amazulu as assistant to Craig Rosely at Amazulu, the two having previously worked together in the same capacity at Ajax.

Amazulu fought relegation for a better part of last season, but Mugeyi recently blamed their poor performance to delays by the players to adjust to the new technical department’s style of play. He said this had been addressed towards the end of the season.

“The team was right at the bottom of the log table when I joined and the following games were some of the most difficult assignments I have ever carried out in my coaching career, but I am glad that we eventually pulled through,” said the former Zimbabwean and South African PSL Player of the Year.

“Our mandate was to survive relegation and thereafter the future of the team would be discussed. The reshuffle continues because some of the players have failed to click to the system we brought and we just continued with them even though they were not the right players for our philosophy.

“Management is busy looking for the right players that will adjust to the new system and next season, we will bring the Durban side back to its glory days. The first option will be to fight for the league and secondly, we want to do much better in all cup competitions where we will compete.”

Mugeyi was impressed with the recent signing of skilful fellow Zimbabwean striker, Brett Amidu from Black Aces Academy for three seasons. Fellow Zimbabwean, Ramson Zhuwawo was shown the door, but defender Carlington Nyadombo and goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini are still on the team’s plans for the coming season.
