ZimRights officials acquitted

ZimRights Director, Okay Machisa, and the organisation’s Programmes Manager, Leo Chamahwinya, have been acquitted of charges of trying to defraud the Registrar General’s Office by allegedly manufacturing counterfeit copies of certificates of voter registration.

The ruling was made today at the Harare Magistrates Court.

Magistrate Donald Ndirowei ruled that the State had failed to submit enough evidence to incriminate the two.

Defence lawyer, Trust Maanda, from the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, said: “Machisa, Chamahwinya and ZimRights have been acquitted.

The Court ruled that the State had failed to provide enough evidence hence the decision to acquit the ZimRights officials.”

In December last year, Chamahwinya was arrested on allegations of manufacturing counterfeit copies of voter registration, together with the Chairperson of the ZimRights Highfield chapter, Dorcas Shereni and two other officials, Farai Bhani and Tatenda Chinaka.

Machisa was arrested the following month on the same charge but later freed on $500 bail.

ZimRights is a non-governmental organisation that conducts advocacy and educational programmes on human rights.
