Zanu (PF) and MDC-T candidates have filed nomination papers to run as independent candidates, a development that has raised fears of a split in the votes.
This month, hundreds of disgruntled supporters gathered at the Zanu (PF) headquarters in Harare to protest over the manner in which the just ended primary elections were conducted.
The development has raised fears of a repeat of the “Bhora Musango” campaign that led to Zanu (PF) conceding its worst ever defeat during the 2008 elections.
The Zanu (PF) primary elections saw suspected cases of arson in Zvimba North following clashes among its supporters.
The MDC-T primaries were also rocked by protests in Chegutu, Epworth and parts of Matabeleland. Party members complained about the imposition of candidates as well as foul play in the conduct of the primary elections.
MDC-N spokesperson, Kurauone Chihwayi, told The Zimbabwean that his party was intact “after holding successful primary elections that have left all members satisfied”.
“We are not fragmented like the MDC-T and Zanu (PF). We had a smooth selection process which was not characterised by violence.”
Chihwayi said his party was prepared for a resounding victory in the elections and expressed satisfaction with the level of preparations.
“We are not going to leave any stone unturned. We are going to make sure that we win the next elections. We will be fielding a strong team from local government to Presidential elections. We are confident because we have a team of credible members contesting for political power,” said Chihwayi.
A total of 1 959 members from the MDC filed nomination papers to contest in the local government elections while 210 contestants filed for House of Assembly seats.
