Uncertainty over Tsvangirai hearing

Morgan Tsvangirai has dismissed the renewal team’s disciplinary hearing scheduled for today accusing the team of failure to formally communicate with him.

Tsvangirai's spokesperson, Luke Tamborinyoka, said the team had no basis to call for a disciplinary hearing considering that they had officially formed a new party.

“There is no hearing. The renewal team indicated that they have formed a new party so why do they want the leader of another political party to attend their kangaroo court?” queried Tamborinyoka.

He said because Tsvangirai could not be brought before a disciplinary committee of another party, he would spend the day engaged in ‘other things’.

“The president of the MDC is too busy to spend the day being brought before such a chaotic team who have openly said they have formed another party. Tsvangirai cannot be part of such a big joke,” said Tamborinyoka.

He said that they had not been served with any formal communication and most of the communication that they were getting about the purported hearing was through media reports.

“Most of the Renewal Team’s intentions are communicated to us through the media. There is no formal communication to us,” he said.

However, the Renewal Team spokesperson, Jacob Mafume was adamant and maintained that the hearing was still on today.

“This is an independent tribunal and if Tsvangirai has nothing to hide then he will attend the court, As far as we know, the hearing is taking place as scheduled and by the end of the day, we are going to issue out a statement according to what would have transpired,” said Mafume.

Mafume dismissed claims that the team was not communicating with Tsvangirai and said efforts to serve him (Tsvangirai) with papers hit a brick wall after the messengers were chased away by the party’s supporters.

“Tsvangirai has to justify why he does not want to attend the hearing because as far as we know, the team that is going to preside over the hearing is an independent team. Delaying the hearing will not do him any good,” said Mafume.

The Renewal Team yesterday appointed three lawyers, Dumisani Mthombeni, Tafadzwa Mugabe and Gift Nyandoro to preside over the disciplinary hearing of Tsvangirai scheduled for today.

However, Mthombeni denied any involvement in the disciplinary hearing, according to media reports.

The Renewal Team is accusing Tsvangirai of failing to provide competent leadership and acting in a manner detrimental to party objectives.

He faces 17 counts of contravening Article 2.1 of the disciplinary code of conduct and regulations as spelt out in the MDC constitution.
