The team is being led by Justine Kersten widely regarded as the top junior golfer in the country and also includes Mbongeni Maphosa, Kieren Vincent and Stuat Krog who were selected following national tournaments held throughout the country.
The Toyota World Junior Golf Championship is the world’s only junior golf championship in which 16 national teams, winners of regional qualifiers held across six continents compete for the world champion trophy.
It is four players aged 18 or below and is contested in a 72 stroke play with the best three scores recorded.
Zimbabwe qualified after winning the Africa Junior Golf Championships at the Chainama Golf Club in Lusaka, Zambia earlier this month, and coach Phillip Tshuma is confident the Zimbabwean team will send the Ritcher scale tumbling. “We are not going there to make up the numbers. The fact that we won in Africa means we can also win the world championship,” said Tshuma.
The Bulawayo based professional said they have prepared fully for the contest using the best courses in the country and are ready to face the best junior golfers the world has to offer. The Zimbabweans will get a feel of the course Monday which is the official practice day.
Zimbabwe and South Africa are Africa’s only representatives while from South America, will come defending champions Venezuela, Chile and 2009 champions Argentina.
Host Japan, winner of three titles, will be accompanied by fellow Asian representatives Korea, winners once and Thailand while 2012 champion Australia returns following last year’s one-stroke, runner-up finish.
North American qualifier Canada will be joined by Mexico and the United States – winners of the most titles with seven, the last of which came in 2005.
Europe will be represented by three countries, continental champion France, Italy and Norway. Norway has two world junior golf titles to their name, while France and Italy are each looking for their first.
The World Junior Golf Championships have been the launchpad to success to some of the world’s top golfers including Zimbabwe’s Brendon de Jonge. Others who have gone through the same route include Justin Rose of England, Trevor Immelman and Charl Schwartzel of South Africa, Henrik Stenson of Sweden and Anthony Kim of the USA. The Zimbabwean team is expected home on June 28.
