Revai Makanje Analbaek, the officer in charge of United Nations Women, told a discussion form at the United Nations Information Centre last week it was disturbing to note that the media continued to perpetuate the stereotype that women are only known for the bad things in life.
“The majority of media articles about women would portray them in the negative and pictures in the nude. A lot of success stories about women are ignored by the media,” she said.
Zimbabwe had taken major and commendable steps towards women’s empowerment but more had to be done to make women self-sustaining, she added – particularly with regard to land reform.
In MayUN Women launched a public mobilisation campaign in the context of the 20th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on women held in Beijing China in 1995. The campaign “Empowering Women-Empowering Humanity: Picture it” builds up to a large scale celebration next March during the commission of the status of women in New York and a high level event at the UN General Assembly later in the year.
