As the economy continues to decline, churning out unemployed youths onto the streets, many locals have ventured into the car wash business to eke out a living.

While EMA has managed to pounce on car wash centres at established centres such as hotels and car sales premises, they have found the going tough to eliminate youths from street corners

The agency says cleaning detergents and chemicals going directly into the drains pose a threat to aquatic life. The youths accused EMA of being selective in their application of the law, accusing it of not targeting car wash centres being operated by politicians.

They cited a car wash at BP, which they claim is run by relatives of Minister of State for Provincial Affairs in Manicaland Chris Mushohwe.

“That car wash is also disposing of chemicals, but EMA is not doing anything about it. They are pouncing on us because we are weak,” said Moses Mupira, 32.

EMA Provincial Manager Kingstones Chitotombe denied that they being selective on their blitz. He said no one was above the law and those who want to venture into car wash business should comply with the requirements.n “Those at garages are spared because they use proper drainage system to dispose their chemicals and detergents,” he said.
