Mugabe names new ministers

President Robert Mugabe yesterday reshuffled his cabinet following the firing of seven ministers and a deputy who are aligned to former vice president, Joice Mujuru.

The ministers who will be sworn in today, together with Emmerson Mnangagwa—who replaced Mujuru—and Phelekezela Mphoko.

Mnangagwa and Mphoko are Mugabe’s new deputies who the president named on Wednesday.

Mugabe delayed naming the new gender and women’s affairs minister, but there is speculation that his wife, Grace will take the position that was occupied by Oppah Muchinguri.

Chief secretary to the President and Cabinet, Misheck Sibanda, announced the new ministers in a statement last night.

Simon Khaya Moyo, who at one time was tipped for the co-vice president’s post, was named economic planning minister.

This is a demotion. Before the new appointment, he was a senior minister in Mugabe’s office.

The new appointments are as follows:

Emmerson Mnangagwa: Vice President

Phekezela Mphoko: Vice President

Prisca Mupfumira: Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Services

Oppah Muchinguri: Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development

Samuel Udenge: Minister of Energy and Power Development

Chris Mushohwe: Minister of Youth Development, Indegenisation and Economic Empowerment

Supa Mandiwanzira: Minister of Information Communication Technology and Courier Services
