Masvingo POSB saved as block catches fire

PROPERTY worthy thousands of dollars was reduced to ashes when a building housing People’s Own Savings Bank (POSB) Masvingo branch caught fire on Monday.

posb 550A swift reaction by the Masvingo city council’s fire fighting team saved the bank from the inferno as the team managed to put out the raging flames before they reached the bank offices.

The building is owned by CAI Pension Fund and is leased to POSB, ZINARA, TAM Charted Accountants among other tenants.

The cause of the fire could not be immediately established but it is suspected to have been triggered by an electrical fault.

“We are yet to establish the cause of the inferno, but we are suspecting that the fire could have been caused by an electrical fault on the second floor of the building.

“The fire destroyed part of ZINARA and TAM Charted Accountants offices and there is no damage to the bank and other tenants housed at the building,” said Locadia Muroro the building’s caretaker.

She added that an investigation on the cause of the fire by a group of experts is underway.

Scores of residents rushed to get a glimpse of the fire department team at work, with residents expressing their gratitude over a quick reaction by the fire fighting team.

“We have seen a number of buildings within the city being reduced to ashes over the years due to the late response by the fire department, but in this case they came within 15 minutes when the fire was noticed and did a good job in preventing the fire from spreading across the building,” said an eye witness.
