Mufundisi Mawarire, we are with you

The only thing that is surprising about the arrest of Pastor Evan Mawarire is that it has not happened sooner.

Pastor Evan Mawarire

Pastor Evan Mawarire

Mugabe and ZANU PF have reacted in the only way they know. Their reaction was entirely predictable. We should have expected nothing else.

Evan Mawarire is a Christian pastor. He walks in the footsteps of the son of a carpenter who spoke of nothing else but justice, love, peace and compassion – a man who was unjustly arrested, tortured and executed for challenging the oppression of the prevailing regime. They believed that they could stop the movement he founded by silencing him. How wrong they were!

They can silence Mufundisi Mawarire but they cannot silence the people of Zimbabwe.

We can protest and splutter and rail against the injustice of the pastor’s arrest but our indignation will achieve little. While we rejoice in his release from custody, if we are to truly support Evan Mawarire, Zimbabweans at home must continue to participate in his peaceful protests. Wear the flag! Stay away! We see how effective these simple strategies are.

Those of us in the Diaspora must not idly stand by wringing our hands. We too must spring into action. We must contact the Foreign Ministers in the democratic countries where we reside and urge them to bring pressure to bear on the Mugabe regime to stop attacking the people of Zimbabwe. Get on the telephone. Email them. We know they will respond if we are united and determined. Pastor Mawarire and our brothers and sisters at home must know that we are with them.

Mugabe and ZANU PF might stop Evan Mawarire. They will never stop his message: We have had enough! We are no longer afraid!
