The American Way Sucks

The American Way sucks, and it fills me with an overwhelming sense of sadness and contemplation. I loved holidays when I was a kid, but nowadays, I find myself disillusioned by the rampant and unending materialism that engulfs our society. The incessant barrage of obnoxious advertisements, which shamelessly equate love with the amount of money spent on consumer goods, makes my stomach churn with despair.

I don’t want to sound like a Puritan, preaching about the perils of plastic Santas and children drowning in a sea of sugary junk and excessive toys. I believe in the power of pleasure, the capacity for joy that resides within each and every one of us. However, what truly troubles me is the uncompromising ignorance and indifference to the cost inflicted upon the countless souls across the globe by Americans in the pursuit of this so-called “richness,” “freedom,” and “generosity.”

We cannot overlook the undeniable connection between global suffering, exploitation, and the modus operandi of colossal American corporations such as Target and Walmart. It is not enough for Americans to toss a few dollars into the Salvation Army kettle before sitting down to unwrap gifts that have been fabricated under the merciless conditions faced by poverty-stricken children, their overworked parents, and workers who are exposed to toxic materials that kill them. If only every American could witness the harrowing process behind the creation of their beloved designer outfits, sparkling diamond rings, or the latest electronic gizmo, perhaps then the true horror of their existence would become clear. Would it not be better if these products had never seen the light of day? Are you not polluting the world with your desires, your insatiable appetite for more?

And it’s not just Americans who are unwittingly fostering this destructive system. Through their movies, music, television shows, and the pervasive reach of the internet, they are spreading the gospel of their ostentatious, wasteful lifestyle, portraying it as the ultimate aspiration for the rest of the world to follow. They peddle their idea of freedom, fueled by consumerism and excess, luring unsuspecting souls into its clutches. But what they fail to acknowledge is that once everyone yearns for and toils after this mirage of the American Dream, there will be no salvation for our wounded earth. We will all meet our demise in the fetid wasteland we have collectively created, suffocated by the mountain of trash you call progress.

As I reflect upon these sobering thoughts, my heart aches with a profound sense of introspection. I mourn for the loss of innocence, for the desecration of our environment, and for the countless lives ensnared in the web of exploitation. The American way, with all its glitz and glamour, ultimately sullies the very fabric of our existence. As citizens of earth, we all, even my fellow Zimbabweans, must question our choices, our values, and the consequences they have on a global scale. Only then can we hope to salvage what remains of our fragile world, shrouded in the darkness of our misguided pursuits.
