Daka, Bwalya get crowned champions at LPCA-YOFOSO rapid chess showdown

JUSTIN Daka of Nkwazi Chess Club delivered a stunning performance to clinch the LPCA-YOFOSO Rapid Chess Tournament title, finishing with an impressive undefeated score of 8 out of 9 rounds.He won seven games and drew two games to finish unscratched in a nail- biting title win.

The one-day event, held at the National Institute for Public Administration (NIPA) in Lusaka, witnessed a series of upsets and triumphs, with young Margret Bwalya of YOFOSO Kings Chess Academy also emerging victorious in the highly competitive female section.Daka began his relentless march to victory by overcoming the favored Gift Banda and continued his dominant run, securing wins in his subsequent matches leading up to the final rounds.

Despite facing formidable opponents, including International Masters Gillian Bwalya and Richmond Phiri, Daka maintained his composure, only conceding draws to Fide Master (FM) Prince Daniel Mulenga and Cornelius Masikini in the eighth and ninth rounds respectively.

His exceptional form saw him rise above established chess figures to claim the coveted top prize.

Meanwhile, the ladies section saw a captivating battle culminate in a maiden major rapid title for 15-year-old Margret Bwalya.

The YOFOSO prodigy amassed 7.5 points, matching Zimbabwean talent Tanaka Dzinyanyi.

However, Bwalya’s superior tie-break score secured her the prestigious victory, marking a significant milestone in her blooming chess career.

The future of Zambian chess also shone brightly in the junior categories.

In the Under-16 Open section, top seed Sauti Joshua Lisuku lived up to expectations, convincingly winning with a remarkable 8.5 out of 9 points.

Nikhil Nitya Vankhedekar displayed absolute dominance in the Under-16 Girls section, achieving a perfect 9 out of 9 score.

The Under-12 Boys section witnessed a close contest, with Jey Pranav Karunakaran edging out Ngambi Mumbi on tie-breaks after both players finished with 6 points out of a possible 7.

In the Under-12 Girls category, Singh Adhya emerged as the winner with 6.5 points out of 9.

Her closest rivals, Namaanza Ntanda and Michele Kavoota, finished second and third respectively, both securing 5 points.

The Madalas section provided a nostalgic yet fiercely competitive arena as well.

Furthermore, legendary International Master Stanley Chumfwa showcased his enduring skill and experience, claiming victory with 6.5 points out of 9, the same score as Tebby Swatu. Chumfwa’s triumph underscores the timeless appeal and strategic depth of chess.

The successful tournament, organised through the collaborative efforts of the Lusaka Province Chess Association (LPCA) and the YOFOSO Chess Academy, highlighted the vibrant and growing chess community in Zambia.

The event provided a platform for players of all ages and levels to compete and showcase their talent, promising a bright future for the sport in the region.
