Benn denies approval of Mkapa mediation

LONDON - Britain has denied that it has approved


an African “mediator” to end the long stand off between the UK and Zimbabwe.


On Monday night at the House of Commons Britain’s Secretary of State for Overseas Development, Mr Hillary Benn told journalist Trevor Grundy that he had no knowledge that such a “mediator” had been appointed.


“Has the former Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa been approved by the British Government as a mediator between Prime Minister Tony Blair and President Mugabe,” was the question.


“My very short answer,” replied Mr Benn “is no.” – By Trevor Grundy
