Zim on full alert against TB

HARARE - The Zimbabwean government will take adequate measures to prevent any spread of the suspected drug-resistant Tuberculosis that has been detected in South Africa.
Speaking at a press conference this week, Deputy Health minister Edwin Muguti said all health personnel in the country, particu

larly at points of entry, were on full alert to detect the fatal disease.
He said the ministry, which is now working with the World Health Organisation on the suspected case, had the capacity to effectively deal with the disease.
“The ministry is collaborating with South Africa and WHO in managing this case and we have the capacity to manage the case effectively so that any spread is minimized, if at all there is any spread,” said Muguti.
Although the resistant strains have been identified in all regions of the world, especially Asia and the former Soviet Union, the immediate goal is to help South Africa control the outbreak that killed 52 of 53 patients in a rural province in recent months. The deaths occurred swiftly, on average within 25 days, and included patients who were taking antiretroviral drugs for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
Muguti said there were no cases reported in Zimbabwe so far. – Own correspondent
