Soccer players defy stereotype

One filthy black brush has painted all of them -clean or dirty- and it has subconsciously become their identity.

27 year-old Martina Masamba turned a deaf ear to the sermons of the soccer players critics and married the love of her life, Ashley Rambanapasi.

People always said bad things about soccer players but he has been a humble, down to earth, organized and responsible husband ever since I have known him, said Masamba.

The Caps United captain, one of the players who despises the label of vakomana vebhora, is happily married with a son, Tanaka, 3.

The wide publicity on stories about Peter Ndlovus unstable love life, David Kutyauripos failed marriage and Evans Gwekwereres recent alleged grab of a Nigerian mans wife has left many fans disappointed.

But Rambanapasi told The Zimbabwean that fans expected too much of them.

It is because of the fame we get from playing soccer that supporters tend to set high expectations of our lives, forgetting we are human, he said. Football supporters are surprised to see us walking in the streets and not driving. They dont expect us to be renting when some of them will also be renting. But I have never been affected by anything people say, it is not about how I feel, but how I take it. Anything can come out from the supporters and it is up to us players to keep focused on our lives and career and not let the spotlight affect us.
