Lest we forget the future

These past two weeks, with the Heroes Holiday and the death of Retired General Solomon Mujuru, all we have been seen and heard from ZBC is the libration struggle and how we ought to acknowledge it as part of our history.

This for me is not a bad thing because it gives us a sense of belonging. However, what I do not appreciate is that we seem stuck in the past and there is not much talk about the future of Zimbabwe.

History is an important learning point. But it becomes a source of concern when as a nation we constantly look backwards and do nor forge a way forward. I am sure that the fallen heroines and heroes were fighting for a brilliant cause and what they would love to see is how we have forged ahead since their departure. This includes planning ahead and not losing the vision.

It is important to ask ourselves what we can learn from our history and build on from there. We have it in us and so let us make that difference so we forge ahead – Let us paint that picture of the Zimbabwe we want to see and celebrate it as much as we do our heroines and heroes!

Mujuru made history by having such a large crowd turn out for his burial. I thought that spoke of the man’s legacy – considering not much bussing of people was done for the funeral. It is noble that we learn from such works done by some heroes and see how we can carry on from their works.

I also saw the burden of women’s work during the funeral. The Vice President, Mai Mujuru had to be acting president while still mourning the death of her husband. This taught me something about leadership and also about being a woman leader. She had to do her job despite her emotional state. I just wonder how her fellow women relatives took this considering our traditional African setting.

Anyway, I liked the way Mai Mujuru called for people to look back at the history and also focus on the future and what her husband had wanted to see in terms of building this nation.

It is vital that as a nation we strategize on our future more and don’t get stuck in history. Surely we all desire to see a bright future for generations to come. – Grace Chirenje-Nachipo is an activist.
