‘Our Word is Our Weapon’ – Documentary On Shoko Festival 2012

This Wednesday the 13th of March the Book Café witnesses Magamba Network presenting “Our Word is our Weapon”, a documentary look into Shoko Festival 2012 as a living experiment in urban culture, free expression and positive social change under trying political circumstances. The documentary is directed by award-winning filmmaker, Tenford Chitanana.

This incisive documentary comes with the constitutional referendum only days away. “Our Word is our Weapon” interviews artists, activists and the public who attended last year’s festival as they explored new ways of breaking down barriers between media, culture and activism to create dialogue in Zimbabwe and beyond.

The festival this year will run from the 17th to the 22nd of September 2013 and will feature spoken word artists, rappers, comedians, DJs and new media activists from all over the world as they open up space for free expression in a place where expression is not always so free. The launch of the documentary will signify the start of this year’s build up to Shoko Festival 2013.
