Me, I want to be a Senator

I quite enjoyed sitting in the sun, doing nothing. I take my cue from Zimbabwes elite the parliamentarians who are off more times than they are on. And earn far more than anybody else no wonder people are prepared to kill in order to be elected to parliament here. The new senators, who wer

e sworn in this week are now members of the cosseted Zanu (PF) assimilados. I know they will be comfortable. One thing Mugabe knows is how to look after his own. I just hope they dont pick up the bad habits of those in the lower house who have been in hibernation since they passed the Senate bill months ago.

They met again briefly this week to consider the budget before taking yet another holiday all expenses paid of course to recover from the rigours of listening to the billions, trillions and quadrillions of Zim Zeros in the meaningless figures spouted by dear old Herbert. (I wonder what kind of a special calculator he is using these days because mine no longer has enough space for all the figures that you need.) Anyway they will then meet again on December 13 to consider the budget once they have all recovered and then It’s the Christmas/New Year break. Lucky for some!

My friend, he whose very nice house in Mbare was destroyed during Operation Murambatsvina and who now lives under plastic sheeting despite having a good job at one of the few remaining factories, was telling me that this Senate thing is useless because they are not even allowed to amend the Budget once it has been passed on to them from the lower house.

Apparently, all that the senators can do is to make suggestions. If the lower house doesnt accept those suggestions thats the end of it. They just ignore those old fogies sitting in the fancy leather seats upstairs. Makes you wonder why anyone in his right mind would actually fight for one of those seats doesnt it? But then again, I suppose that is what we Zimbabweans have been reduced to some of us are so desperate that we will do anything for a regular monthly salary and a few crumbs from Mugabes table.
