EDITOR - 'If I can not teach the truth what will I teach?' Matigari. Yet Zimbabwean teachers are brutalised, victimised, intimidated and blackmailed by the government for teaching the very truth that is such a basic tenet of education. The latest assault of delaying teachers' bonuses by governme

nt is a clear attempt to reduce teachers to beggars and habitual debtors. It is a well-orchestrated attempt by a government, which regards teachers as its number one enemy. It is a calculated political move to erode the political influence of teachers and undermine their traditional role of being society’s opinion makers and political kingmakers.

I salute the Zimbabwean teachers for maintaining their professional integrity and ethics. The government can underpay us, delay our bonuses and even deny us those bonuses but it will never take away our role as harbingers of the truth to the learners we teach and the society we live in. Governments come and go but the truth we stand for will remain on the chalkboard for all to see.
