Dynamos off to a flying start

HARARE - Harare soccer giants Dynamos began the new soccer season in style when they dismissed new boys Shooting Stars 1-0 in a league encounter at Rufaro Stadium on Sunday.The form


er champions found the winner four minutes from time through the boot of striker Evans Gwekwerere. The goal was greeted by wild celebrations by thousands of Dynamos fans at the stadium.


Dynamos were locked in a bitter dispute with Shooting Stars during the off-season demanding compensation for developing several players who had quit the Harare giants to join the new club.


Reigning champions CAPS United also started the defence of their Premier Soccer League (PSL) title with a crucial 1-0 away win over new boys Zimbabwe Saints at Barbourfields Stadium yesterday.


Captain Limited Chikafa scored the all-important winner in the second half. According to reports from Bulawayo, CAPS looked rusty as they blended the players who did not travel for the Champions League encounter with those who took part in the ill-fated tournament.


CAPS woes were worsened by the fact that six of their foreign-based players could not play due to problems with their work permits. MasvingoUnited who threatened to take the title away from CAPS last year, also started the season in style beating newcomers Mwana Africa 1-0 at the National Sports Stadium in Harare.


Highlanders, who are expected to make a strong case for the championship, battled to a 2-1 win over Chapungu at Ascot Stadium in Gweru. Ralph Matema, who struggled to score last season, was the hero of the day with a brace. Elsewhere, Lancashire Steel beat Railstars 1-0 at Baghdad Stadium in Kwekwe while Shabanie Mine lost 1-2 at home to Hwange. On Saturday, Monomotapa thrashed Motor Action 3-1 at Callies Sports Club while Buymore lost 1-0 to Black Rhinos at Rufaro Stadium.
