Khan transferred from Chikurubi

HARARE - Jailed Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) chairman Rafik Khan was expected to be transferred to a more decent Connemara Prison near Kwekwe recently, following heavy lobbying from po

liticians.

Khan, a wealthy Harare businessman and ruling Zanu (PF) official began serving his prison term on Monday last week after the court upheld a conviction for a crime he committed 17 years ago.

The Zifa boss was found guilty of theft after he broke into and stole a car radio in 1992 but was never sentenced after he appealed against the conviction. The case has not been dealt with since then.

A senior prison official in Harare, who refused to be named, said Khan, who is being held at the filthy and overcrowded Chikurubi Maximum Security prison, was expected to be transferred to Connemara after senior politicians intervened on his behalf.

“I believe it was easy for Khan’s case to be considered because of his standing in society and also considering that the said crime took place in 1989. Barring any last minute hitches, Khan is on his way to Kwekwe,” said the official.

Zimbabwe’s jails are notorious for the tough conditions there with inmates dying in prison because of a lack of food and disease particularly AIDS because of rampant homosexuality. – ZimOnline
