Zim dies in Jozi fire

JOHANNESBURG - One person died while several hundreds almost perished, with two of them seriously injured, in a fire that nearly consumed a whole residential flat in Hillbrow.
Fire erupted on the fifth floor of Iorna Court, corner Twist and Wolmarans Street on Saturday, flatt

ening the whole floor as residents ran for their lives.
One person was burnt beyond regnition while two others were severely injured as they jumped down from the fifth floor.
Police spokesperson at the scene, Constable Mduduzi Zondo, confirmed the death of one person and the two injured people who were quickly ferried to hospital.
“At this point in time we are not able to tell the cause of the fire as our investigations are still going on. It took the fire brigade almost two hours to bring the fire under control,” Zondo said.
However, a number of people staying in the flat told CAJ News that a woman and her husband had a fight which resulted in the man locking the room and setting it on fire before taking to his heels.
One of the residents, who identified herself as Ndlovu, said: “I heard people screaming all over and I clutched my baby on the back before speeding down the stairs. Although there was already smoke all over, we managed to escape. But the terrible thing now is that we have no place to sleep. – CAJ News
