Broadcast law needs to change

HARARE - A parliamentary committee has conceded that the country's broadcasting laws effectively exclude private broadcasters.
In a report to parliament June 1, the Committee on Transport and Communications said the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe should regularise the "stringent" requireme

nts under the Broadcasting Services Act, which make it almost impossible for private companies to set up TV or radio stations.
Committee member Forbes Magadu urged the authority to concentrate on issuing licenses to private players especially for community radio stations throughout the country.
“Other players should enter the market. We cannot continue to live in isolation. We have only one licensed television station,” said Magadu.
