Celtic sunk by Bednar double
LONDON – Celtic, the champions, crashed to a 2-1 Scottish Premier defeat at Hearts as Roman Bednar struck twice, while Rangers had to come from two goals down to salvage a 2-2 home draw with Dundee United. And Gretna’s astonishing rise continued when they started life in Division 1 with a thumping 6-0 home win over Hamilton.
Welshman John Hartson, a former Celtic star, scored twice on his West Bromwich debut in a 2-0 home win over Hull in the English Championship. But there were mixed fortunes for the two other teams that came down, Birmingham winning 2-1 at home to Colchester, but Sunderland losing 2-1 at Coventry after scoring first.- John Hughes
