olice shooting before describing it as “high handedness of the police”.
SATAWU national spokesperson, Ronnie Mamba, said his organisation treated the offence as “an attempted murder”.
One of SATU’s top leaders, Oupa Mbhele was shot four times at close range before being rushed to hospital, where he is battling for his life.
“The name and identity of the offending officer is known to SATAWU and we will be following the matter closely,” said Mumba.
COSATU Spokesperson, Patrick Craven, said the shooting of Mbhele should be condemned in strongest terms. “We send our best wishes to him for a full and speedy recovery and will fully support the action being taken by SATAWU to pursue a case of attempted murder. “This tragedy reinforces COSATU’s determination to curb the excessive and increasing violence used by the police on demonstrations. There must be the fullest possible investigation into this incident and urgent steps taken to avoid any repetition of such conduct by the police,” said Craven.
