Hick, Goodwin hit hundreds

LONDON - Graeme Hick, the Zimbabwean run-machine, scored 104 and then 105 not out as Worcestershire drew at home to Essex in Division 2 of the County Championship. The 41-year-old has confirmed that he will stay with Worcestershire next year for a 24th season.
Lancashire and Sussex, neck-and-neck

for the Division 1 title, were both thwarted in rain-ruined seaside matches at Blackpool and Hove respectively. Another Zimbabwean, Murray Goodwin, hit 107 for Sussex in their draw with Hampshire for whom South African wicketkeeper-batsman Nic Pothas scored an unbeaten 122 and followed up with six victims in the Sussex’s first innings. Meanwhile, Lancashire drew with Warwickshire.
Surrey, relegated last season, have clinched promotion back to the top flight. Skipper Mark Butcher and Ali Brown scored centuries in a 218-run win over Glamorgan at The Oval. – John Hughes
