SA police abuse Zim women

JOHANNESBURG - The South Africa Police Services have been accused of sexually abusing female Zimbabweans, according to research carried out recently to validate claims of ill-treatment.
Commissioned by Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition in conjunction with Lawyers for Human Rights, Centre for Study of

Violence and Reconciliation and Human Rights Commission, the research revealed rampant abuse of police powers by the South Africa police.
The report has been handed over to the minister of home affairs, Nosiviwe Nqqkula-Mapisa to provide the department with credible evidence of abuse, highlight the plight of refugees and raise critical awareness.
A woman who had just come to South Africa was arrested with two officers who demanded bribe or sexual favours to secure her release. When she refused to sell her body she was locked up in Germinston Police Station for two days. She was released when she arranged to pay the officers R150, but the police are still harassing her despite obtaining the asylum paper.
Gayatsi Sigh of Witwatersrand Forced Migration Programme said, “There is a continued trend of sexual abuse of Zimbabwean women by SAPS and Metro Police. In addition, women are being abused by their employers and they are afraid to report the cases to police because most of them are undocumented.”
She called upon organizations to document the cases of sexual abuses and take them to the Independent Complaints Directorate to investigate. – CAJ News
